Kaelo Destinations Highlights Family Safari and Beach Homes

By the time October arrives, the idea of a year end getaway tends to shift from conversation to calendar, and families and friend groups move from wishing to booking. Kaelo Destinations, the collection that includes Mashatu Game Reserve in Botswana and Pambele Beach House in Mozambique, is leaning into this planning season to spotlight a particular part of its portfolio: exclusive-use homes where a single group keeps the property, its guide and the shape of each day entirely to itself.
The collection does cater to solo travellers and couples through its lodges and suites, but four of its properties are meant to be booked in their entirety by one party of eight to ten people. At Mashatu these are Kolokolo Safari Home, Shalimpo Safari Camp and Fika Futi Safari Camp, joined by Pambele Beach House on Mozambique's San Sebastian Peninsula. Each puts its own stamp on private travel, spanning everything from fully catered ease to pared-back self-catering deep in the bush.
Why exclusive use suits group travel
A multi generational family holiday, or a trip shared among friends, carries a set of logistical realities. Young children and grandparents run on different clocks. One guest is keen on a full day in the field while another would rather spend the afternoon beside the pool. Across a group of eight, meal times, activity times and bedtimes almost never fall into tidy alignment. Booking a whole home for the group alone takes most of that tension away. The party dictates its own tempo, and the stay is shaped around those particular people instead of a fixed lodge schedule shared with strangers.
The way Kaelo Destinations frames its broader approach echoes this. Small guest numbers, private access and intimate experiences define its properties, and a conservation levy is folded into every stay to back local communities and sustainability efforts. Kaelo itself is drawn from the Setswana word for to guide, guardian or to nurture, a word that mirrors how the company treats both the people who visit and the land its properties occupy.
Kolokolo Safari Home: catered privacy on the Limpopo
Groups after a Botswana safari where nothing is left for them to organise will find Kolokolo Safari Home the fullest option. This exclusive-use home rests in a peaceful garden that slopes down to the banks of the Limpopo River in Mashatu Game Reserve's Pitsani area. Inside are four en-suite bedrooms sleeping eight, a shared living space with a fireplace at its heart, a generous lounge and dining room, and stacking doors that fold open onto a veranda that wraps the house.
A private chef handles every meal, and the group is given its own game viewing vehicle and guide for tailored drives morning and evening. In the hours between, guests can take a dip in the reservoir swimming pool while scanning the river for wildlife, enjoy lawn games across the gardens, or come together at the outdoor boma and braai area once the sun is down. Solar energy powers the whole of Kolokolo, and children of all ages are welcome.
Shalimpo and Fika Futi: self-catering in remote corners
For those who would rather do their own cooking and lean into a plainer, more rugged stay, Mashatu's Explorer Collection holds two self-catering camps. Either suits anyone chasing a Botswana safari lodge experience stripped of hotel formality.
Shalimpo Safari Camp perches on a rocky kopje above the meeting point of the Shashe and Limpopo Rivers, the spot where Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa come together, giving views into all three countries. Four bedrooms sleep as many as eight, and the camp offers open plan living and dining spaces, a covered patio, a farm-style kitchen, a small plunge pool and a boma and braai area for starlit evenings. Food and drink can be ordered ahead and delivered before guests arrive. Entirely off-grid and run on solar power and lantern light, the home comes with a dedicated guide and a private vehicle for its drives.
Fika Futi Safari Camp sits near the historically significant Tuli Circle, at the junction of Botswana and Zimbabwe. A renovated traditional farmhouse, it stands beside a waterhole on a small tributary of the Matabole River and features a swimming pool, a look-out deck facing the waterhole and an outdoor boma. Its game drives cover roughly 10,000 hectares of the unfenced Northern Tuli Game Reserve, next to the core of Mashatu, where animals roam freely along natural corridors. The name translates to arrive again, a gesture to returning guests. Both camps host groups of eight and welcome children of all ages.
Mashatu Game Reserve: the land of giants
Each of the three safari homes falls within Mashatu Game Reserve in Botswana's Tuli Block, a 42,000 hectare private reserve that goes by the Land of Giants. Mashatu is celebrated for its big cat and predator sightings and for carrying some of the largest elephant herds found on any private game reserve in southern Africa. Its terrain shifts from ancient sandstone ridges to riverine forest, and what guests can do across the reserve runs from game drives to cycling along elephant trails and, via WalkMashatu, guided walking safaris that include nights beneath the open sky.
Reaching it is simple enough. A flight from Johannesburg to Mashatu takes about 1.5 hours, and the Kaelo team can assist with air and road transfers via Limpopo Valley Access. The safari homes lie roughly 45 minutes to an hour by road from Limpopo Valley Airfield and the Pont Drift border.
Pambele Beach House: the coast to themselves
Over on the Mozambique coast, Pambele Beach House carries the same exclusive-use idea to the shoreline. Anyone weighing up Mozambique beach resorts will see that Pambele is deliberately something else. It is a privately-owned beach house set inside the Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary on the remote San Sebastian Peninsula, looking out over the Bazaruto Archipelago, and only one group occupies it at any given time.
Four sea-facing en-suite villas accommodate up to ten guests, each with its own sunbathing deck, alongside open plan living spaces, an infinity pool, a jacuzzi and dining both indoors and out by the sea. A dedicated team, a private boat and a vehicle are ready for sea and land outings every day, letting the group mould each day to its own wishes, be that time on the water, working along the coastline or barely moving at all. The décor draws on and is sourced from local artisans, and the property runs on solar power paired with a natural water filtration system.
Guests arrive at Vilanculos International Airport aboard daily Airlink flights from Johannesburg, then reach the house by a 45 minute boat ride or a seven minute scenic helicopter charter. Open year round except for February, Pambele welcomes children of all ages. Its current offer bundles in a one-way helicopter transfer on departure for stays of four nights or more, plus a 10% saving on bookings of seven or more consecutive nights.
Combining bush and beach
With only a short flight separating the two destinations from Johannesburg, a single trip can pair a Mashatu stay with time at Pambele, carrying the group from game drives on the Limpopo to the turquoise waters of the Bazaruto Archipelago. Families travelling with children get real variety out of that pairing without the drag of long overland journeys, and both properties hand over the privacy of an entire home.
Built on conservation and community
Kaelo Destinations grew out of the vision of Maggie and Stephen Lansdown CBE, who are entrepreneurs, philanthropists and conservationists. Conservation-first tourism, genuine experiences and community upliftment form the collection's foundation, and its properties sit off-grid, sustainably powered, with design meant to merge into the landscape around them. Looking forward, the company has signalled its intent to bring new journeys and destinations into the collection as time goes on.
